As a donor to Root Capital, Inc. (“Root Capital”), reader of our Website or subscriber to our newsletters and updates, we understand that you are entrusting this organization with certain, sensitive personal information. Protecting the privacy of that information, and maintaining your trust are of critical importance to Root Capital. This privacy policy (the "Privacy Policy") is intended to help you understand our information security practices, and specifically what we WILL NOT do with the information you provide to us both on and off line. 

First and foremost:  We will not trade, share or sell a donor’s personal information, or anyone else’s with anyone outside of the Root Capital organization, nor will we send you any donor mailings on behalf of other organizations.


The Information We Collect

This notice applies to all information you submit to Root Capital both on and offline. By submitting your personal information (“Information”) you agree to the terms of the Privacy Policy and you expressly consent to the processing of your Information according to the Privacy Policy.  All data collected by Root Capital is processed in the United States and protection of that data is subject to the applicable privacy laws and regulations of the United States and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.


How We Use Information

Again, we do not sell, share or trade personal information (including email addresses) to outside parties. We use the Information we collect about you to facilitate the completion of your request and to provide information to you about Root Capital. We use return email addresses to answer the email we receive.

Please be aware that, to the extent required to provide our services, we may share your Information with volunteers, or those organizations contracted to assist in providing Root Capital’s services, as applicable.

For Newsletter Subscribers
We may use our email lists for sending out our newsletter and other Root Capital outbound communications, such as policy changes, or other related news.

In all cases, we use Information provided by you for the purposes you provided the Information. For instance, if you e-mail us with questions, we may use the information in your e-mail to answer the question. Please note that any feedback or comments provided by you on the web site may be generally accessibly by any visitor to the Website. Therefore, please take care when posting feedback or comments to the Website, as you will forfeit the privacy of that information.


User Payment Information

When individuals access the Website or call us by phone in order to make a donation to Root Capital, they must provide payment information (such as credit card number and expiration date). This information is used for one-time and recurring billing purposes according to the type of donation being made and the terms pertaining thereto. Root Capital has partnered with Network for Good to securely process your online credit card payment via networkforgood.org (tax ID 68-0480736). These transactions are subject to Network for Good’s Privacy, Security & Disclosure Statement. For credit card donations received over the phone, Root Capital uses Square, Inc. for secure payment processing.

If we have trouble processing a donation, personal information is used to contact the user. Payment information is stored in encrypted format and is used only to send to our credit card processor for the purposes of collecting donations. We never make this information visible to anyone other than our credit card processor and never communicate it over a non-encrypted connection. The full credit card number is never seen by anyone inside our company, once entered and submitted, except by the credit card processor for the purposes of authorizing, clearing and reversing charges to your credit card.


User Profile

We store personally identifying information that we collect, and log files to create a profile of our users.

In the unlikely event that Root Capital transfers all or substantially all of its assets to another entity, the acquiring entity will be subject to this Privacy Policy in its use of your personally identifiable Information. In addition, in the further unlikely event that Root Capital dissolves or is adjudicated bankrupt or insolvent (a) there will be no further use or disclosure of your personally identifiable Information by Root Capital and (b) your personally identifiable Information will be destroyed. In addition, there will be no use or disclosure of your personally identifiable Information by any entity that acquires assets of Root Capital pursuant to such bankruptcy or insolvency proceedings.

Due to factors beyond our control, however, we cannot fully ensure that your Information will not be disclosed to third parties under all circumstances. For example, we may be legally obligated to disclose Information to the government or third parties under certain limited circumstances and in other instances, unlawful third parties may circumvent our security measures to improperly/illegally intercept or access your Information.

We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our Website to read the privacy statements of each and every website that collects personally identifying information. This Privacy Policy applies solely to information collected by Root Capital.

Opt-in Policy for Newsletters & Communications
Subscriptions to Root Capital newsletters are optional and Root Capital allows subscribers or other users to subscribe to newsletters at any time.  In each newsletter we provide instructions regarding how to opt-out from receiving future newsletter mailings. You can also email us at info@rootcapital.org to remove your name from our newsletter subscription data base and ensure that you will cease receiving future newsletters from us.

We may also use our email lists for sending out other Root Capital outbound communications such as policy changes, or membership news.


Our Commitment To Data Security

To prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure the correct use of Information, we have put in place reasonable physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the Information we collect online.

Payment information (such as credit card number and/or social security number) is protected, by using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) software, which encrypts the aforementioned information when viewed online.

In addition, we limit access to personally identifying information to employees who we believe reasonably need to receive such information to provide our services or in order to do their jobs and take other precautions we deem reasonable to protect the security of users' personally identifying information.  We provide continuous training to all employees charged with handling sensitive donor, visitor, subscriber information. 

However, users should be aware that we cannot fully guarantee the security of their personally identifying information. As in many computer systems, internet applications and software programs, unauthorized use, failure of hardware or software, etc. may be injuriousness to the confidentiality of users' personally identifying information.


Notification of Changes to Policy

If we decide to change our Privacy Policy, we will post those changes to the Privacy Policy section of the Website and other places we deem appropriate so our users are always aware of what information we collect, how we use it, and under what circumstances, if any, we disclose it.
